End Cruelty at Polk County Animal Shelter—Ban Inhumane Euthanasia and Demand Reform

End Cruelty at Polk County Animal Shelter—Ban Inhumane Euthanasia and Demand Reform
The Issue
For years, residents, former volunteers, veterinarians, and adopters have raised the alarm about the conditions inside Polk County Animal Control. Reports of animals left in dirty kennels, cats with untreated wounds, sick dogs lying on broken cots, and an overall environment described as “harmful for the animals” show a system that is failing the very creatures it is meant to protect. Polk County now has the highest euthanasia rate in Florida—far outpacing neighboring counties that have successfully implemented modern, humane shelter policies.
These animals deserve basic care, safety, and compassion. When a 12‑week‑old puppy like Anya can leave the shelter bleeding, vomiting, and fighting a preventable parasitic illness, something is deeply wrong. When community members report concerns month after month, only to be ignored, the public trust breaks down. And when advocates fear the shelter may be relying on outdated, painful euthanasia methods rather than humane, sedated procedures, the stakes become impossible to ignore.
We are asking the Polk County Board of County Commissioners and the Polk County Sheriff’s Office to take immediate action to end inhumane treatment at Polk County Animal Control. The animals in this county deserve care that meets basic welfare standards—clean kennels, access to medical treatment, humane handling, and a commitment to use only modern, compassionate euthanasia practices when absolutely necessary.
Other Florida counties have already proven that high-intake shelters do not have to rely on inhumane methods or unacceptable living conditions. Polk County can follow their lead by adopting humane euthanasia protocols, strengthening medical oversight, and ensuring every animal is cared for.
Community members have been speaking up for years. Now we need leadership to do the same.
Please join us in urging Polk County’s elected commissioners and the Polk County Sheriff’s Office to take responsibility, act with transparency, and implement the reforms needed to protect the animals in their care.
