End congressional pay during government shutdowns

The Issue

When our government shuts down, real people suffer. Perhaps one of the most frustrating aspects of a government shutdown is the knowledge that while hundreds of thousands of federal employees face uncertainty, anxiety, and financial strain, those responsible for the gridlock—our elected officials in Congress—continue to receive their paychecks uninterrupted. I believe this must change.

Imagine facing the burdens of unpaid bills, delayed services, and essential programs left in limbo. That is the reality for many government workers and American citizens during these shutdowns. If the people have to feel the burden when they choose to shut the government down, then elected officials should feel the same burden. Our elected leaders should not be insulated from the consequences of their legislative stalemates.

The statistics speak volumes: According to the Congressional Research Service, since 1990, there have been 21 instances of a federal government shutdown, affecting millions of Americans. Each shutdown costs taxpayers an estimated $1.4 billion per week, not to mention the immeasurable impact on the lives and livelihoods of everyday citizens.

The solution? Implement legislation to withhold the pay of members of Congress during government shutdowns. Doing so would serve as an incentive for lawmakers to work more diligently toward bipartisan solutions and keep the government functioning smoothly. With their financial well-being tied to the well-being of the nation, Congress will likely take more urgent action.

Join me in calling for a change that holds our leaders accountable. If our government isn't working for us, neither should it work for them. Let’s push for equity and fairness in our political system. We urge Congress to pass legislation that stops their pay during any future government shutdowns.

Sign this petition to demand accountability and fairness from our lawmakers. Together, we can urge Congress to prioritize the needs of the American people over political brinkmanship. Let's make sure they feel the weight of their decisions, just like we do.
