End cetacean captivity

The Issue

Like many of you, we grew up in awe of the ocean. We remember the first time we saw a dolphin or a whale—whether in a book or behind a glass tank—and felt that instant connection to their grace and intelligence. But as we started digging deeper for our project, *Beyond The Tank,* that wonder turned into a wake-up call.

Cetaceans, including dolphins and whales, are some of the most intelligent and complex creatures on earth. In the wild, they have intricate social structures, communicate through a variety of sounds, and can travel vast distances each day. Yet, over 3,000 dolphins and whales remain confined in tanks across the globe, stripped of their natural habitats and family bonds.

The impact of captivity on these marine mammals is severe. According to research by the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society, cetaceans suffer from stress, depression, and physical ailments in confinement. The tanks that hold them are often 200,000 times smaller than their natural range in the ocean, contributing to abnormal behavior and a significantly reduced lifespan.

Globally, we have seen progressive movements recognizing the rights of animals to live free from captivity. Countries like Canada, India, and Chile have enacted legislation banning or phasing out cetacean captivity. It's time for more countries to follow suit and end this unethical practice.

We urge policymakers, oceanic theme park operators, and the public to shift towards more ethical and sustainable ways of engaging with marine life. Virtual reality experiences, educational marine sanctuaries, and responsible wildlife tourism offer viable alternatives that do not compromise the well-being of these magnificent creatures.

Our oceans depend on healthy ecosystems, and cetaceans play a vital role in maintaining them. By keeping them confined, we not only disrupt their wellbeing but also the ecological balance of our oceans.

Join us in calling for an end to cetacean captivity. Sign this petition to stand with us in protecting these remarkable beings and promoting a future where they are appreciated for their true magnificence—in the wild, where they belong.
