End Cash Bail & Reform Capital Punishment
The Issue
My sister spent six years incarcerated for a crime she didn’t commit because we couldn’t afford her bail. Her innocence was eventually proven, but the time and life lost are irreplaceable. Sadly, her story is not unique. Every day, thousands of individuals remain in jails across our nation, not because they have been proven guilty, but because they cannot afford their freedom.
The current bail system disproportionately affects low-income individuals and communities of color, exacerbating inequalities and overburdening our already crowded jails. The commercial cash bail system undermines the presumption of innocence, a foundational principle of our justice system. This is not justice.
Moreover, our capital punishment system is riddled with constitutional failings, leading to irreversible miscarriages of justice. Innocent lives have been lost and many more remain at risk due to these systemic issues. It's time to correct these wrongs and build a justice system rooted in fairness and compassion.
The "Justice Isn’t For Sale Act" offers a beacon of hope. This comprehensive reform package aims to abolish commercial cash bail, ensuring that individuals are not detained simply due to financial inability. It also seeks to address the critical failures in our capital punishment framework, aligning it closer with constitutional mandates of fairness.
By supporting this legislation, we can take decisive steps towards dismantling an unjust system that allows for the buying and selling of freedom and life. Reforming these practices can prevent other families from enduring the same heartache and loss that mine did.
Join us in urging Congress to pass the Justice Isn’t For Sale Act to create a judicial system where justice truly serves all, irrespective of socio-economic status. Sign this petition to demand that our representatives act now before more innocent lives are touched by this broken system. Together, we can make a difference.
