Today marks exactly one year since I launched my first ever online petition to Tesco. After a few years of fairly unsuccessful letter writing, a petition was just another attempt to make such a huge company consider the animals behind the items they sell, and with your help, we had our voices heard.
After public pressure from animal welfare organisations and a staggering 280,000 signatures on our petition, Tesco made the commitment to phase out caged hens eggs by 2025. This may seem like an incredibly long way in the future, but it is progress; it is a step forward towards a more compassionate way of treating these wonderful animals. In addition, the timeframe reflects the fact that eggs are produced on farms and by farmers. We have to respect the fact that we are reliant on these farmers to produce eggs, and they need to be given enough time to make changes too.
Moving forward, I think the most important thing to change is the way people think about supermarket products. Sometimes, all if takes is for us to stop and think 'where did this really come from?' whether this is whole shell eggs from caged hens or those used as products, if we simply stop and check where the eggs have come from, we then have the power to influence supermarkets by only buying products containing free range eggs!
In the next few months, I will have some very exiting plans to announce, so please do look out for future updates! I can't wait to continue this incredible journey, and I hope that you will all show the same fantastic support you have done for the last year.
