End blanket ID checks on digital platforms

The Issue

For years, I've been a dedicated user of YouTube, Spotify, Roblox, and TikTok. I grew up watching Minecraft videos and Let's Plays from creators like DanTDM on YouTube—none of which were harmful. Spotify has been my go-to for making long study sessions enjoyable with music. Roblox has offered countless games I've invested years in, and TikTok’s algorithm made my feed more engaging than other platforms like Shorts. However, lately, these platforms have imposed blanket ID checks and restrictions that undermine the experiences they were originally built on.

These ID verification practices force teenagers to submit government IDs simply to enjoy music, videos, or games. This blanket approach is punishing the entire user base, instead of targeting real risks and harmful users. Platforms like YouTube, Spotify, and TikTok must recognize the importance of their communities and their roles as safe digital spaces for entertainment and creativity. Roblox, in particular, should stop imposing ID scans on all players and instead focus directly on removing predatory behavior, which is the true danger to the community.

Data indicates that ID checks can significantly deter young people from participating in online communities due to privacy concerns. A Pew Research survey highlights that 81% of teens worry about their online privacy. Forcing ID verification only exacerbates these fears, marginalizing many users who fear their personal information might be mishandled or exploited.

Moreover, these sweeping measures do not effectively combat the root issues of online safety and security. Instead of blanket policies, platforms can implement age-verification techniques that do not compromise privacy or use AI-driven monitoring to better detect and address harmful content. By doing so, they can maintain a safe environment without sacrificing user privacy and community trust.

We call on YouTube, Spotify, Roblox, and TikTok to halt invasive ID checks and explore alternative measures that effectively target real threats without putting undue burden on the whole community. Help us restore these platforms to the wonderful spaces they once were, allowing creativity, entertainment, and connection to flourish safely.

Sign this petition to urge these companies to protect user privacy and refocus on community-driven solutions.
