END Appeals for convicted Murderers in premeditated cases : Justice for SHEA GORDON
The Issue
Two years ago, my nephew was brutally murdered in an attack that left our family shattered. He was chased before being fatally attacked and , Evidence showed the murder was premeditated, and chilling words like, “Did I get him?” were captured, confirming the perpetrator’s intent. After a fair trial, two individuals were convicted and sentenced to 21 years in prison.
Today, these same individuals are appealing their sentences, forcing us to relive the trauma and pain of losing someone we loved dearly. This is not justice. Families like mine should not have to endure this all over again, especially when the evidence leaves no doubt about their guilt.
The UK justice system currently allows convicted murderers to appeal their sentences, even in cases where premeditation is clear and guilt has been proven beyond reasonable doubt. This not only retraumatizes families but also undermines the gravity of the crime and the suffering caused.
Why Change Is Needed
Impact on Families: Appeals force victims’ families to relive their trauma, reopening emotional wounds that never truly heal.
Clear Evidence of Guilt: In cases where premeditation and guilt are overwhelmingly proven, the appeals process feels like an unnecessary loophole.
Undermining Justice: Allowing convicted murderers to seek leniency undermines the justice served during their initial sentencing.
Our Call to Action.
We are calling for a change in the law to limit the right to appeal for convicted murderers in cases where:
- Premeditation is evident.
- Evidence of guilt is overwhelming.
- Victims’ families will be unnecessarily retraumatized.
Evidence
- A 2020 report found that approximately 1 in 3 appeals result in reduced sentences for serious crimes, including murder. This highlights the frequency of sentence reductions, often at the expense of victims’ families.
- Studies show that retraumatization of can lead to severe emotional and psychological impacts on families, including PTSD and depression.
Let’s Protect Families Like Mine
Let’s end the opportunity for leniency while we are left to carry the weight forever. We believe that once a fair trial has taken place and a sentence is handed down, the focus should shift to supporting victims’ families, not giving convicted murderers another chance to reduce their sentences.
By signing this petition, you’re standing with us to demand justice for murder victims and their families. Let’s ensure that murder convictions and sentences truly reflect the gravity of the crime and protect those left behind from further pain.
