I am a resident of Edwardstown, and like many of you, I have grown increasingly disturbed by the prevalence of animal testing in our community. It feels personal because I believe in the humane treatment of all creatures, and I am sure many of you do too. The horrors of animal testing are not often visible to us, but they occur every day and their implications are far-reaching. Thousands of animals suffer needlessly in the name of cosmetic and medical advancement, which is unacceptable. According to Humane Society International, over 100 million animals are being used for animal testing worldwide annually. This is a stark contrast to the reality we want to live in – a world where creatures are not subjected to torture for our gains. In Australia alone, over 6.09 million animals were used for experimental and educational purposes as reported by Australia's National Health and Medical Research Council. Our beloved Edwardstown should not contribute to these disheartening figures. Let's come together to take a stand against animal testing and advocate for alternative, non-animal methods which scientific community is making advancements in.
