The Issue

I'm a resident of Memphis, TN, and currently living through a nightmare that has left me powerless. Judge Kathleen Gomes, in an unlawful act, took my elderly father away from me and appointed ElderCare Consultants as his conservator. They removed him from our home where I cared for him, banned me from seeing him, and immediately started draining his assets to pay themselves. They have wiped out more than $100k from his life savings and left him in a nursing home to struggle with dementia alone.

My soul-wrenching experience is not unique. Countless others have suffered the same fate. I have spoken to numerous families who were subjected to this grim process – their stories echo my own. We have all been victims of Judge Gomes and the Shelby County Probate Court.

The conservatorship system, designed to protect the elderly, is riddled with corruption leading to elder abuse and fraud. According to the National Center on Elder Abuse, financial exploitation is a commonly reported form of elder abuse, and our elderly population, particularly those with diminished capacity, are particularly vulnerable to such exploitation. The Netflix movie "I Care A Lot" portrays the injustice which numerous American families have faced.

This petition aims to stand up against these unjust practices. We are calling for immediate reform and asking for Judge Gomes and her 'probate posse' to be removed from their positions. We need a system that is transparent, just, and truly has our elder's best interests at heart.

Take a stand against elder justice misuse. Sign the petition today, and join us in the fight to end the corruption and abuse in the Shelby County Probate system.
