The Issue

After dedicating 30 years of my life as a civics teacher, I see a great need for improving support and oversight for civic education at the county level in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. My experience has taught me that the best teachers of civics are community leaders and hands-on opportunities. If we want to instill in our students the importance of civic engagement and awareness, we need to improve local and regional efforts to support this crucial aspect of education. This is why I call for the establishment of a Director of Civics Enrichment position in Westmoreland County.

Civics education is fundamental to the future of our communities and our democracy. It equips individuals with the knowledge and skills they need to become responsible citizens who participate actively in civic life. Without dedicated leadership, many of our students are missing out on essential lessons in democracy, community involvement, and public responsibility—which ultimately weakens the fabric of our society.

A Director of Civics Enrichment would be tasked with developing and implementing programs that foster a culture of civic participation among youth and the broader community. This position would act as a bridge between educational institutions and local government, ensuring that students have opportunities to engage in meaningful community activities. Moreover, it would provide oversight and a unified strategy to boost civic literacy across Westmoreland County.

Furthermore, common sense supports the notion that counties with dedicated civic education roles will demonstrate higher levels of civic engagement, improved social cohesion, and greater voter turnout. These are positive impacts that Westmoreland County needs to remain competitive and thriving. By taking this step, our county could set a powerful precedent for other regions to prioritize civic growth.

I strongly believe this initiative could ignite a transformative spark in our community. It’s time for Westmoreland County to lead by example and stand committed to nurturing informed and engaged citizens. Let’s create a legacy for generations to come!

Please join me in calling for the establishment of a Director of Civics Enrichment by signing this petition. Together, we can make a difference in the education and empowerment of our neighbors and future leaders.
