Encourage UK awareness on vehicle idling laws

Encourage UK awareness on vehicle idling laws
The Issue
As someone deeply concerned about both public health and the environment, I am urging the UK Government to take immediate action in raising awareness about the legal and health implications of idling vehicles. Having spoken to many idling drivers, I am astonished at how unaware they are of the harm their actions cause to the environment, the health risks to all, especially young children with asthma, and even the impact on their own pockets. Many are unaware that turning off their engines not only promotes cleaner air but also saves money. I understand some may need to charge their phones, heat or cool their vehicle or de-mist etc but I'm on about the majority not minority.
In the UK and other countries including the United States, idling your engine while stationary for more than two minutes is generally illegal under Section 42 of the Road Traffic Act 1988 and enforceable by a £20 fine. Yet, it is often overlooked due to the overwhelming demands on our police force, who I believe are unable to enforce this fine consistently or instead even educate drivers to the harm caused. Meanwhile, vehicles idling unnecessarily contribute significantly to pollution by emitting harmful gases such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide, and hydrocarbons, exacerbating both local air pollution and global climate change.
To tackle this issue effectively, I propose a nationwide awareness campaign, featuring advertisements, billboards, and public service announcements, to inform drivers of the law and the benefits of turning off their engines when stationary. This effort will not only aid in reducing harmful emissions but will also help protect public health, reduce respiratory issues and related deaths, and contribute to combating climate change by fostering a culture of mindfulness and responsibility among drivers. Newer vehicles actually automatically turn off their engines to combat this. It doesn't damage engines regularly turning them on and off a lot. I turn my engine off when stuck in unmoving traffic jams as well.
By educating and reminding the public through an orchestrated campaign, we can collectively reduce the unnecessary pollution impacting our environment and health. Join me in urging the UK Government to invest in this vital awareness initiative. Hopefully if this is successful in the UK, it can then maybe urge other European nations and worldwide to do the same. Please sign this petition to show your support for cleaner air and a healthier planet.
