Encourage respectful language in media
The Issue
As a devoted Christian, it deeply pains me every time I hear the name of my Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, used in media as an expletive or in a derogatory manner. This petition is not about converting people to Christianity, although it would bring me joy if individuals chose to explore the teachings of Jesus for themselves. Instead, my plea is simple: respect. Respect for the names of Jesus, Christ, and God, which are frequently misused in television and films as vulgar expressions.
Many Christian viewers, and viewers from various faiths, are confronted daily with media that casually links the sacred names of Jesus or God with offensive language, as a means of emphasizing a point. This practice is not only hurtful to those who hold these names sacred, but it is also unnecessary and can be avoided with thoughtful scriptwriting.
The entertainment industry holds significant influence and power, often shaping societal norms and language. By deliberately choosing to not use blasphemy, filmmakers and television producers can foster a more respectful environment for all viewers, regardless of their religious beliefs.
There are numerous other ways to express emotions and ideas without resorting to language that deeply offends. Creative expression should never compromise someone's deeply held beliefs.
We live in a pluralistic society where respect for each other's beliefs is paramount for harmony and coexistence. I urge broadcasters, screenwriters, and producers to actively seek alternatives to portraying blasphemy in their works. By choosing language that respects all viewers, the industry can lead by example and promote a culture of mutual respect and understanding.
Our request is not a large ask, but a crucial step towards ensuring that all individuals feel respected and valued when consuming media. Please join me in calling for the respectful use of language in television and film.
Let's encourage the creators of media to think twice before using language that might offend someone's deeply held beliefs. Sign this petition to promote a media environment that respects and reflects the diverse values and languages of its audience.
