Encourage Reflective Clothing as School Uniform for Children

The Issue

Is your child visible when they walk home from school?
Could they be more visible - and safer?

As a concerned citizen, I am deeply troubled by the alarming statistics surrounding child pedestrian accidents in the UK.

Every year, one in three of all child pedestrians that are killed or seriously injured on our roads are aged 10-11 years. Most of these casualties occur between 08:00-09:00 and 15:00-16:00hrs, coinciding with school commutes.

Furthermore, every month in the UK, approximately 1200 children are injured in traffic-related collisions within just 500m of a school (data from www.rospa.com )

These distressing figures highlight an urgent need for action to protect our children as they travel to and from school each day. One simple yet effective measure could be making the use of reflective clothing for all children part of school uniform.

Reflective clothing significantly enhances visibility, especially during early morning or late afternoon hours when light conditions can make it difficult for drivers to spot pedestrians. By ensuring that all children wear reflective clothing during their commute to and from school, we can reduce their risk of being involved in road traffic accidents.

We cannot stand by while our children's safety is at risk on their journey to education every day. We must take action now - before another child becomes a statistic.

Please sign this petition calling on lawmakers to ensure reflective clothing is part of school uniform for all children walking to and from schools across the UK. Together we can make our roads safer for our most precious resource – our children.
