Encourage Embracer, Marvel Games, and Crystal Dynamics to develop Avengers sequel.

The Issue

Dear Crystal Dynamics, Marvel Games, and Embracer Group,

First off, the undersigned want to thank all parties involved in the development and creation of Marvel's Avengers. For many of us this game holds a special place; whether it was nostalgia for the characters we have grown to love, the promise of a post launch supported game, or simply a game that helped people connect during the Covid-19 pandemic. Those of us attaching our support below for whatever reason enjoyed this game immensely and we want to make sure all parties know how loved this game was and quite frankly still is. We understand there must be numerous and compelling reasons to end support for this game, and as adults we can accept rational business decisions. We are not seeking to reverse any decision or make childish demands or threats, but we seek to start from gratitude. Most games are quite simply one and done, we spend $60-$70 on a new title and get maybe 30-50 hours in return. Let's be real, the price per hour to enjoy the immense labor and investment of modern gaming is still quite a steal for players. For many of us when it comes to Marvel's Avengers our playtime is more like hundreds of hours or beyond, we can not refute we got our money's worth. Yet, the recent announcement of the game's end should also reflect how much more the fans crave. The sheer fact the announcement resulted in so much traffic to the Crystal Dynamic's post that the site couldn't support it and Marvel's Avengers trended on Twitter shows the audience was there. We are not privy to all the details but from a layperson perspective the game appeared to sell well at release, and it appears the rough launch and dwindling player base made the financial future difficult. The idea of potential consistent content and support for years at no cost may have sounded too good to be true, and it seems in the end it was. We feel it should be known since launch and even now the fans desire for more should not be seen as selfish or greedy, but a sign there still exists immense demand for not just a Marvel licensed title, but a love and appreciation for the well crafted narrative and vision that will likely go fully unrealized. The team working on this title in the end seemed to be hamstrung by decisions made well before their time on this project and it would appear those decisions served as a limitation on the ability to meet promises delivered prior to release.

What we suggest, that we hope all parties consider, is that the Crystal Dynamics take on the Avengers deserves a second chance. We are certain there is a dedicated audience willing to see this solid foundation get a second chance. If we are to believe leaks and rumors, there are many hours of labor and investment that will ultimately never be in the final product. Pumping additional resources into a diminishing returns project doesn't make sound judgment. However, applying lessons learned and with Embracer groups resources many of us believe a fully realized sequel for this title could be made. While most of us are lay people when it comes to game development we have some suggestions for said project.

  • Many have pointed out the engine selected for this project when it started as a single player did not translate well to the final project. Tapping into the potential of Unreal 5 could simplify the long term costs of staff.
  • The idea of only monetization of cosmetics was wonderful for consumers, but not ideal for business. Perhaps a subscription model where annual members get early access to content, cosmetics, and other perks.
  • Another successful model would be a battle pass model for players to purchase a seasonal battle pass. Players could earn additional resources, exclusive emotes, extractors, and costumes.
Improving relationships with content creators and fans in general. Let's face it, communication was poor during the life of the game. At first the regular streams from Andy, Layla, and Phil were amazing, and can not be praised enough. However, as time went on radio silence, shifting strategies, unpopular moves, and occasional drama. Any rational adult understands real world issues that can impact decisions, but keeping important information too close to the vest or simply as “soon” did not help. Many fans wanted this game to succeed and are willing to help. Perhaps a fan advisory board of community elected liaisons with more transparency would foster an all together mentality.
  • If you want the live service model to succeed, plans need to be more concrete up front, year 1 and ideally year 2 should be articulated at point of sale, we know firm commitments are hard and numerous variables make such guarantees hard to honor. However, confidence will likely increase a consumer’s willingness to invest in a product.

We understand this is a long shot, even a response from any of the parties mentioned is unlikely. Though nothing ventured nothing is gained. The community that put this letter together formed from this game. This community started from casually playing together to assembling every Friday to compete in races of the War for Wakanda raid. What started as friendly competition soon became a tight community of friends. We even came together and raised money as a community to purchase a PS5 for an injured member of our community. We all enjoyed this game and the bonds of friendship from it. All we ask is that consideration should be made to continue this project hopefully in a new title that learns from the mistakes but more importantly expands on the amazing attributes of the first.
