Encourage companies to create snack-free checkout lanes

Encourage companies to create snack-free checkout lanes
The Issue
Retailers have made this final point of our shopping journey a battleground where we're surrounded by high-sugar, ultra-processed snacks, strategically positioned to exploit our impulses. These snacks, beverages, and confections are placed to drive immediate sales, in a mandatory location to make purchases, not to cater to our nutritional needs, and it’s those of us striving to improve our health who suffer the most.
Retail environments that are filled with engineered temptation reinforce behaviors contributing to obesity, prediabetes, and other metabolic diseases. With every visit to the store, we find ourselves in a war against items that have no benefit to our well-being, yet seem impossible to ignore due to their sheer pervasiveness. If a store wants to sell snacks to cater to all tastes, that's their right, but snacks don't have to be sold in a location that cannot normally be avoided. It's time for a change.
Nutrimatters urges companies nationwide to adopt a snack-free checkout policy. This is not just about removing candy or soda; it means eliminating all food and beverage items from the checkout lane that contain calories or have taste. By doing so, retailers can create a shopping environment that supports healthier choices and reduces the pressure on consumers to constantly defend their decisions against unhealthy options.
Studies have shown that removing the display of unhealthy snacks at checkout can reduce impulsive purchases and lead to better dietary choices. For example, a study published in The Journal of Public Health demonstrated a significant decrease in the purchase of sugary items when they were removed from direct view at the point of sale.
At a time when metabolic illness is the leading burden on American families and healthcare systems, continuing this practice is increasingly difficult to justify. A Tufts University–led 2022 study by O'Hearn M, et al. showed that only 6.8 % of U.S. adults had optimal cardiometabolic health, meaning companies with snacks at checkout lanes are likely harming more than 93% of Americans.
Retailers already committed to wellness can begin setting a precedent that prioritizes public health over profit margins and leads the industry toward a more responsible, ethical approach to product placement. This move towards a snack-free checkout benefits both consumers and businesses as companies align themselves with the rising demand for healthier food environments.
And it's just good business. Spending less money on metabolic-disease-related healthcare significantly improves family budgets and leaves more money for other purchases that enhance lives.
Please join Nutrimatters.org in calling for a healthier retail experience by encouraging all retail stores to implement a snack-free checkout policy. Sign this petition to help us create change and support a healthier future for everyone.
