Encourage Cedar Point to Improve Conditions for Barnyard Animals

The Issue

As an animal lover with a growing appreciation for farm animals, I’ve found myself increasingly concerned about the conditions at The Barnyard petting zoo at Cedar Point. The animals—goats, sheep, pigs, and more—are kept in small enclosures, exposed to the constant noise of nearby roller coasters, and left to endure the intense summer heat. While the petting zoo may seem like a fun attraction for families, the environment appears far from ideal for the animals involved.

Beyond animal welfare concerns, the petting zoo has also raised serious safety issues. According to recent reports from Cleveland 19 News and FOX 8, animals have escaped their enclosures three times in the past year. This puts both the animals and guests—especially children—at risk. When stressed or improperly handled, animals can behave unpredictably, and a chaotic theme park is not an environment designed to safely accommodate that risk.

During my own visits, I noticed that staff did not appear fully trained to manage or care for the animals. On one occasion, I saw a goat jump into a neighboring pig pen, and the staff seemed unsure of how to respond. This was just one isolated incident I observed by happenstance during my first visit in over a year. These incidents reflect not just lapses in oversight but a deeper issue: a lack of preparedness, training, and infrastructure to support the animals’ well-being.

With this in mind, I’d like to gently propose that Cedar Point consider one of two positive paths forward: either phasing out The Barnyard in favor of more humane, engaging alternatives, or making meaningful improvements to better support the animals’ well-being. If the zoo remains, enhancing staff training, increasing shelter and shade, reducing noise exposure, and expanding the animals’ living spaces could make a real difference in both animal welfare and guest experience.

If you agree that the current conditions at The Barnyard should be thoughtfully improved—or that the attraction may no longer be suitable for a setting like Cedar Point—please consider signing and sharing this petition. With enough voices, we can encourage the park to take meaningful steps toward a safer, more compassionate experience for both animals and guests.
