The other day we celebrated the 33rd anniversary of the passing of the American Disabilities Act (ADA). To mark the occasion U.S.A. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg offered the mobility disabled some more lip service and platitudes by saying legislation will be introduced which will require NEW single-aisle planes with at least 125 seats to EVENTUALLY have at least one lavatory large enough for a disabled passenger and an attendant to enter and move around in. Twin-aisle planes are already required to have an accessible lavatory.
The problem with this and airline accessibility in general is that the accessibility ends at the gate where they manhandle the mobility disabled into flimsy, skinny and dangerous aisle chairs and push us into the aircraft, and then lift us into and out of our seats. Although accessible bathrooms sound good on the surface, and are needed, they will only be for the flimsy, skinny, dangerous aisle chairs, because we gave up our own wheelchairs at the gate, and we won’t see them till our destination, hopefully in one piece and undamaged.
If we do not continue to make as much noise as possible to encourage aircraft manufactures to make full accessibility a priority, this “promise” to have a bathroom that only the aircraft’s skinny, uncomfortable and dangerous aisle chair can fit into, will just be used to push full accessibility into the background where it’s been for decades.
