The Issue

Leah's story is both heartbreaking and all too common. I rescued Leah, a Malamute, when she was just two years old, from a life of suffering and neglect. She had spent her entire life chained on a mere four-foot tether, in a backyard dump without any shelter. Weighing only 32 pounds, Leah was severely malnourished—less than half the weight of a healthy Malamute. Her body was ravaged by every kind of worm, including the deadly heartworm, which threatened to take her life. Leah also bore physical scars; she had her bottom teeth knocked out, a slight limp from being kicked, and her beautiful coat was so matted from being forced to live in her own feces that we had to shave her completely.

Unfortunately, Leah's story is just one of many similar cases in North Carolina. Currently, the laws in our state fall short in providing adequate protection to abused and neglected dogs and cats. We need to enact stricter animal protection laws to address these severe issues. These laws should enforce stronger penalties for those who neglect and abuse their domestic animals. It is not only essential to protect animals like Leah from such inhumane treatment, but also to hold those responsible fully accountable.

One major reform needed is the criminalization of lifelong chaining of dogs, which is both cruel and unjust. Dogs deserve a life free from chains, starvation, and neglect. Moreover, individuals who have been charged with animal cruelty should be prohibited from owning pets in the future. We must stop the senseless allowance of shooting stray dogs; these are lives that matter and deserve protection just as much as any other living being.

Furthermore, it's imperative that Animal Control fulfills its duty to protect animals adequately. Authorities need to respond effectively to reports of abuse and neglect, ensuring that animals in distress receive the protection and care they urgently need.

Every day that these reforms are not implemented, more animals suffer in silence. Let's stand together to demand change and create a state where animals are safe and treated with the dignity they deserve. Sign this petition to urge lawmakers in North Carolina to strengthen animal protection laws and ensure that no animal suffers the way Leah did.
