Enact protective measures for vulnerable road users

Enact protective measures for vulnerable road users
The Issue
On December 10th, my life changed forever. A terrible vehicle collision took my 3-year-old daughter's life. We were crossing a designated pedestrian area, my daughter in her stroller beside me, when we were struck by a truck. It is an unbearable pain, a reality no parent should endure, and it’s prompted me to call for urgent reforms.
This tragic incident highlights a critical issue: our roads are not safe enough for pedestrians and vulnerable road users like cyclists and mobility device users. The existing laws are inadequate in preventing such heart-wrenching tragedies. We urgently need an Act to protect pedestrians and vulnerable road users through immediate administrative accountability, practical age-related safety re-evaluation, and mandatory infrastructure response.
This petition calls for amendments to the Highway Traffic Act and the Municipal Act, 2001, to establish a unified safety protocol for collisions involving motor vehicles and vulnerable road users. We need comprehensive policies that hold drivers accountable and mandate regular assessments of elderly drivers' abilities to ensure they can safely navigate modern traffic conditions.
Statistics show that nearly 6,000 pedestrian fatalities occur each year in the United States alone. This number is a stark reminder of how glaringly unsafe pedestrian crossings can be. With targeted measures, this number can decrease significantly, saving numerous lives from being shattered.
Moreover, infrastructure upgrades are vital. This includes the installation of advanced traffic control devices at pedestrian crossings and better urban planning to accommodate the needs of all road users, ensuring that areas are well-lit and clearly marked.
To ensure the safety of pedestrians and vulnerable road users, it is crucial that legislation reflects the urgent need for change. By signing this petition, you are advocating for safer streets and helping prevent such devastating losses in other families. Please join me in urging lawmakers to take immediate action and safeguard lives that still have a chance.
Sign this petition to demand that our roads become safer for everyone.
