Enact Legislation to Safeguard Recess Time in Schools

Enact Legislation to Safeguard Recess Time in Schools
The Issue
My son, a bright and energetic 4th grader with ADHD, has always been fortunate to have teachers who understand his needs. They've respected his differences and guided him without ever denying him the vital break that is recess. This period of free play is not just essential for children like my son but for all children, regardless of whether they have a disability or not.
Recess plays a vital role in the physical, social, and emotional development of children. It provides an essential break from academic pressures, allowing them to engage in physical activity, socialize with peers, and refresh their minds. Unfortunately, I have personally observed instances where recess is being reduced or eliminated, adversely affecting the overall well-being of our children.
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), "Recess is a crucial and necessary component of a child's development and should not be withheld for punitive or academic reasons." Despite this clear stance from medical professionals, schools in our community - Defiance, OH - are still using recess as a form of punishment.
This practice goes against what we know about child development. Studies show that regular breaks improve cognitive performance (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) while also contributing positively to social skills development (Pediatrics Journal). Yet some schools continue to withhold this important part of the day as punishment.
We need legislation that protects recess time in our schools. This law would prohibit schools from withholding recess as punishment, ensuring every child gets the break they need for their physical health, mental well-being, and overall growth. I appreciate the dedication to our community and your commitment to the well-being of our youth. I believe that together, we can make a positive difference in the lives of our children.
