Enact Legislation for Work Visas and Free English Courses for Immigrants in Illinois

The Issue

My great-grandfather, a brave man who risked his life to escape from Cuba on a small boat, was fortunate enough to be rescued by an American cruise ship. Had it been a Cuban military boat instead, he would have faced severe punishment for his attempt to seek freedom. His story is not unique; countless immigrants face similar perilous journeys in search of better lives.

Today, many immigrants in the state of Illinois are still struggling with barriers that prevent them from fully integrating into society. One such barrier is the lack of access to work visas and free English courses at our colleges.

According to the Migration Policy Institute, as of 2018 there were approximately 1.7 million immigrants residing in Illinois - making up nearly 14% of the state's population (Migration Policy Institute). Yet despite their significant contributions to our economy and culture, many are denied basic rights due to their immigration status.

We propose legislation that allows all immigrants residing in Illinois access to work visas - providing them with legal means for employment and economic stability. Additionally, we call on our lawmakers to establish funding for free English courses at local colleges - ensuring they have the necessary language skills required for job opportunities and social integration.

This proposed legislation will not only benefit immigrant families but also enrich our communities by fostering diversity and inclusivity while boosting economic growth through increased workforce participation.

Let us honor my great-grandfather's journey towards freedom by ensuring all individuals seeking refuge or opportunity here have fair access towards achieving their American dream. Please sign this petition today!
