Enact Laws to Block Harmful Search Content

The Issue

I lost my partner to suicide on May 24, 2025, and I've been heartbroken ever since. Even I have grappled with suicidal thoughts and found myself able to research various ways to end my life. Only the support of my family and friends has kept me from acting on those thoughts. Alarmingly, search engines provided me with the information required to do this.

It's troubling that while technology has advanced to a stage where AI platforms like ChatGPT prevent access to dangerous content, other search engines still allow individuals to search for harmful methods to take their life, such as how to tie knots or the combinations of medications to consume. This accessibility of harmful information can lead vulnerable individuals further down a dangerous path.

I urge lawmakers to create strict regulations to block online content that provides ways to kill oneself. The digital world should be a place where search engines protect people by discouraging harmful inquiries and providing resources for help and support instead.

Additionally, it's crucial to train retail workers in mental health awareness. Employees in shops selling potentially harmful items, such as ropes, should be educated to recognize signs of distress. They should be encouraged to check on customers and offer support or guidance when necessary.

The power of collective action can incite change. Join me in calling for stricter regulations around lethal search content and enhanced mental health training and awareness in the retail space. Sign this petition and help create a safer world online and within our communities.
