Enact Gabriel's Law - Thoroughly Investigate Child Abuse Claims

Gabriel Fernandez is not the first California child to die as a result of inadequate investigation of child abuse claims, but he must be the last. We need a Gabriel's Law to honor the memory of this innocent child who was failed by the system and to prevent the same thing from happening to another child, because it will unless we act now.

Gabriel Fernandez, an 8 year old boy from Palmdale, CA was brutally tortured and eventually murdered by his mother and her boyfriend on May 22, 2013. He had suffered a fractured skull, three broken ribs and burns to his skin. Two of his teeth were knocked out, and paramedics found BB pellets embedded in his lung and groin.

There were over 60 reports of abuse but yet he was allowed to remain with his mother and none of the reports were adequately investigated.

His grandparents have filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the Los Angeles County agencies involved in this horrifying situation. I believe that LA County will not be able to adequately reform their system, and I also believe that other counties in California have the same issues. This is a state issue, and as such state legislators need to take immediate action.
