Enable Persons With Disabilities in Canada to Receive Benefits While Living in the USA
The Issue
I reside in Canada, a place I am increasingly disappointed in due to high housing costs, overpriced phone plans and data, high grocery costs, and limited availability of familiar goods. Especially compared to our friendly neighbor - the USA, and yes, the administration of Justin Trudeau is just too much for me. There are certain aspects of Canada, indeed, that make life challenging, particularly for those of us living with disabilities. Despite our grievances, we stayed, primarily due to one aspect - the disability benefits.
The British Columbia (BC) Persons With Disabilities (PWD) benefit and other disability aids available in Canada are crucial lifelines for people like myself. But why should we continue compromising other aspects of our lives to ensure we can sustain these benefits?
Hence, this petition calls for the introduction of measures to enable persons with disabilities in Canada to maintain their Canadian disability benefits whilst living in the United States. Across the world, approximately one billion people live with a disability. In Canada, over 6.2 million people, aged 15 and over, report living with at least one disability that limits their daily activities (according to Statistics Canada, 2017). Canada is globally recognized for its effort to enhance disabled persons' quality of life. However, forcing citizens to stay within the country's borders to retain disability benefits is limiting and sees many of us compromising our potential quality of life.
We propose a system where disability benefits earned and deserved are transportable, our nationality notwithstanding. This proposal is significant as it acknowledges our right to live anywhere our heart desires, while not being penalized for choosing to live outside of Canada's borders.
Support our call to enact policies that support Canadians' mobility without stripping away their right to necessary disability benefits. Please, sign this petition today.
