Enable access to domestic abuse history through online search
The Issue
I'm currently facing a personal challenge that I never anticipated: discovering a person's past regarding domestic abuse is nearly impossible with the tools available to the public. When I needed to know, I was met with obstacles that could have been avoided with the right information access. I couldn’t find anything using search engines like Google, and learning about someone's history through Claire’s Law is a lengthy and daunting process.
This is not just a problem for me; it impacts countless others in the UK who are trying to ensure their own safety and the safety of their loved ones. Domestic abuse is a serious issue, affecting approximately 2.3 million adults aged 16-74 each year in England and Wales alone, according to the Office for National Statistics. The figures are staggering, yet accessing this crucial information is unnecessarily difficult.
Claire’s Law, or the Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme, is designed to provide individuals with vital information regarding their partner's past. However, this law is often inadequate for real-time, urgent situations because it requires an official application, police verification, and considerable waiting time before any information is released. This can be potentially life-threatening for those needing immediate information.
Given the technology at our fingertips, it shouldn't be impossible to implement a more accessible and efficient system. I propose that the UK government create a secure online registry where individuals can easily check for any domestic abuse history associated with a person's name before entering into or continuing a relationship with them. This registry should be updated regularly in conjunction with law enforcement agencies to ensure accuracy and reliability.
Privacy and data protection laws must certainly be maintained, ensuring that the registry is only accessed responsibly and as needed. By providing suitable safeguards and rigorous identity verification processes, we can protect both the individual searching and the person whose name is searched.
This initiative would not only empower potential victims but also act as a preventive measure against the recurrence of abuse. It’s about giving people the peace of mind they deserve when forming relationships. No one should have to live in fear due to the lack of accessible information.
Join me in urging the UK government to take this important step for public safety and protection. Let’s create an effective system that allows us all to make safer choices. Please sign this petition to help bring about a much-needed change.
