Empowering AYUSH Practitioners to Bridge the Healthcare Gap in Underserved Areas

The Issue

India faces a critical healthcare crisis, especially in rural and underserved areas. With over 70% of the population living in rural regions, the availability of qualified medical practitioners is alarmingly low. The doctor-to-patient ratio in these areas falls far short of WHO recommendations, leaving millions without access to basic healthcare.

AYUSH practitioners, including BHMS graduates, have been playing a significant role in bridging this gap during their internships at Community Health Centers (CHCs) and Primary Health Centers (PHCs). They possess the knowledge and skills to handle primary care effectively, often stepping into the roles of allopathic practitioners under government supervision. However, after completing their internships, they are denied the opportunity to practice independently in similar settings, despite their proven competence and willingness to serve.

This double standard not only limits healthcare access for underserved populations but also undermines the potential of AYUSH practitioners to contribute meaningfully to the nation’s health system.

We, the undersigned, call upon the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and relevant authorities to:

1. Introduce a Bridge Course: Develop a short certification program for AYUSH practitioners focusing on basic modern medical care, emergency management, and essential drug prescription.

2. Implement Area-Based Licenses: Grant AYUSH practitioners the legal right to practice primary care in underserved and rural areas where access to healthcare is critically low.

3. Ensure Accountability: Establish a framework for regular audits, monitoring, and continuing medical education to maintain quality and safety in practice.

By empowering AYUSH practitioners, we can:

1) Significantly improve healthcare access in rural areas.

2) Reduce the burden on overworked MBBS doctors.

3) Recognize and utilize the untapped potential of AYUSH practitioners in strengthening India’s healthcare system.

Let us work together to bridge the healthcare gap and ensure equitable healthcare for all. Sign this petition to make a difference!

Together, we can advocate for a more inclusive and effective healthcare system. Sign and share this petition to bring attention to this critical issue and urge policymakers to act now!
