Ten years ago, I found myself navigating the complexities of the legal system, and unexpectedly, I am facing its intricacies once again. Recently, the police imposed a Domestic Violence (DV) Protection Order against me, completely disregarding the wishes of my partner of 18 months. The broad and vague language surrounding DV definitions has enabled authorities to manipulate scenarios according to their interpretation. On June 18, 2025, law enforcement forcibly removed my partner and our pets from our home, defying her explicit desires. This personal experience underscores the pressing need to revise how laws are created, presented, and enacted in Queensland.

It is crucial that Queenslanders, and ultimately all Australians, have a genuine say in the legislation that governs their lives. Laws should not be hastily enacted to fulfill campaign promises, nor should they bypass public scrutiny only to later prove ineffective or unjust. To ensure legislation "passes the pub test," it must be clearly defined, with specific boundaries, timelines, and built-in best practices, right from the start.

When laws are vague or rushed, they lend themselves to misuse and can have absurd consequences, failing to protect those they intend to, while punishing those unfairly caught within sweeping generalizations. Detailed and precise language in legislation can prevent authorities from extending their powers unjustifiably and shield citizens from unintended legal ramifications.

To enact meaningful change, it's vital that legislative processes are transparent, inclusive, and reflective of the community's voices. Queensland can lead by example, setting a standard for a democratic process that actively involves citizens in policymaking. Legal reforms should integrate best practices and guidelines, cautiously considered and defined within the legislation, rather than as hasty patches after issues emerge.
