Employees Want Weight Loss Medication Coverage from Private Employers
Employees Want Weight Loss Medication Coverage from Private Employers
The Issue
I trust this message finds you well. I am writing to bring to your attention the critical matter of including weight loss medications in our employee benefits package, particularly in light of the recognition by esteemed medical organizations and authorities of obesity as a chronic illness.
In 2013, the American Medical Association officially deemed obesity a chronic illness or disease. This classification is further supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO), among other international and national entities. It is imperative to acknowledge that obesity is a complex condition influenced by both genetic and environmental factors, and it often leads to a cascade of other health issues.
As you may be aware, the costs associated with obesity, including the treatment of related conditions and potential complications, can be substantial. Left untreated, obesity can result in severe health consequences, and in some cases, it may even lead to premature death. It is crucial to recognize the urgency of addressing this issue comprehensively and proactively.
While weight loss surgery is currently covered under our benefits, it is essential to understand that not all individuals are suitable candidates for surgical intervention. Hence, providing alternative options such as weight loss medications aligns with a comprehensive approach to managing this chronic disease. When considering the financial aspect, the cost of weight loss medications is significantly lower than the potential expenses associated with treating multiple chronic conditions resulting from untreated obesity.
Moreover, in the competitive landscape of employer benefits, it is time for us to equalize the territory against competing employers. Many of these organizations already cover all available medications, including the newest GLP-1 options, for weight loss. By expanding our benefits to include these medications, we not only demonstrate our commitment to the well-being of our employees but also ensure that we remain competitive in attracting and retaining top talent.
It is worth noting that as a company providing benefits to the community, those same individuals are a part of our extended family. They too need access to the available medications that can aid in their struggle against obesity, and do not require step-therapy to obtain. By offering comprehensive benefits, we contribute not only to the health of our employees but also to the well-being of the community we serve.
I kindly urge you to reconsider and broaden our benefits package to include weight loss medications. This adjustment would not only reflect our commitment to the well-being of our employees but also align with prevailing medical understandings of obesity as a chronic and progressive disease. I urge you to consider this beginning with the new insurance plan starting January 1, 2024. This kind of availability is what employees are going to look for in employer health insurance.
Thank you for your time and understanding.
