Emory’s Law: Mandating Essential Safety Features on School Buses

The Issue

On April 25, 2022, my daughter, Emory Sayre, was tragically taken from us when she was run over by her own school bus—an accident that could have been prevented with the basic safety features. No parent should have to endure this heartbreak, and no child should be put at unnecessary risk due to outdated safety regulations.

According to NHTSA, 218 school-age children died in school bus-related crashes from 2011 to 2020. Nearly 40% were kids who were walking.

We are calling on lawmakers to mandate life-saving safety measures on all school buses, including:

• Safety Crossing Arm Gates to prevent children from walking into blind spots.

• Cameras & Sensors to alert drivers when a child is in harm’s way.

• Enhanced Training & Accountability to ensure bus drivers are fully prepared to protect their passengers.

Currently, these features are optional in several states, leaving safety decisions up to school districts rather than making them a nationwide standard. We believe no child’s life should depend on a budget decision.

By signing this petition, you are joining us in urging legislators to pass Emory’s Law—because one preventable tragedy is one too many. Let’s protect the children who rely on school buses every day.

Please sign and share to help make school buses safer for every child.
