Emergency Funding Needed to Prevent Pet Surrenders in Nebraska

The Issue

Across Nebraska, animal shelters are sounding the alarm. They’re overcrowded, underfunded, and overwhelmed. Behind every surrendered dog or cat is a family facing impossible choices—do they pay the rent, buy groceries, or keep their beloved pet? With inflation driving up the cost of food, housing, and veterinary care, more Nebraskans than ever are being forced to give up animals they love.

This isn’t just a shelter issue—it’s a community crisis.

Staff at local shelters are working tirelessly, but they’re running out of space, supplies, and options. Some facilities are at double or even triple their intended capacity. Without immediate emergency funding from state and local officials, shelters will have no choice but to turn animals away—or worse.

No one should have to choose between economic survival and keeping a pet that is part of their family.

We’re calling on Nebraska’s Governor, Legislature, and city officials to provide emergency funding and resources to animal shelters and rescue organizations across the state. These funds could help cover vet bills, food, staffing, and temporary boarding assistance for families in crisis—support that would keep more pets out of shelters and with the people who love them.

These are not luxury asks—they are lifelines. The animals in these shelters didn’t choose to be abandoned. The families surrendering them are not irresponsible—they’re desperate.

We must act now to stop this heartbreaking cycle before it gets worse. Nebraska has always taken pride in its compassion, its care for animals, and its strong communities. Let’s show that same compassion now by stepping up to protect the most vulnerable among us—both human and animal.

Sign this petition to urge Nebraska’s leaders to deliver emergency relief to overcrowded animal shelters and struggling pet families today.
