PETITION TO THE STATE OF ALASKA

Stop Driver's License Suspensions for Child Support Debt and Reform Mandatory Auto Insurance Requirements

To the Governor of Alaska, the Alaska State Legislature, and the Alaska Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV):

We, the undersigned residents and supporters of the State of Alaska, respectfully petition for legislative and administrative reforms that help working Alaskans remain employed, support their families, and maintain their independence.

We Request:

1. End the practice of suspending driver's licenses solely for unpaid child support.

Many Alaskans live in rural areas, travel long distances for work, and depend on their driver's licenses to provide for their families. Suspending a person's license often makes it harder—not easier—for them to earn income and pay child support obligations.

We believe that:

People need transportation to keep their jobs.
Taking away a driver's license can create additional hardship.
Child support enforcement should focus on helping parents become financially stable and productive.
Keeping people employed benefits children and families.
2. Review and reform Alaska's mandatory auto insurance requirements.

We ask lawmakers to examine whether current insurance requirements place excessive financial burdens on low-income Alaskans struggling with rising costs of housing, food, fuel, and healthcare.

We support:

Affordable insurance options.
Expanded hardship exemptions or reduced-cost programs for low-income residents.
Policies that keep people legally mobile while still promoting public safety.
Fair treatment for working families facing financial challenges.
Statement of Concern

Too many Alaskans feel trapped in a cycle where financial hardship leads to penalties that make recovery even more difficult. When people lose their ability to drive, they may lose employment opportunities, access to medical care, and the ability to support their children and families.

We believe government policies should focus on solutions that encourage employment, responsibility, and economic recovery rather than creating additional barriers for those already struggling.

Therefore

We respectfully urge Alaska's elected officials and state agencies to:

End driver's license suspensions related solely to child support debt.
Study and reform mandatory automobile insurance requirements.
Develop alternatives that help citizens work, pay obligations, and remain active members of their communities.
