Lower the risk: Allow self-determination of health in Fall 2020
The Issue
The risk for coronavirus transmission in enclosed, poorly ventilated rooms (such as a classroom) remains dangerous even with masks. Rising evidence posits AC can circulate the virus for hours and render the physical distancing of desks useless. The long-term effects of this virus are unknown, and many students and faculty are very worried about themselves or others sick even with Elon's "safeguards." A semester of college is not worth dying over.
DEMANDS:
1. All students must be able to choose to engage in class remotely. Instructors are already being required to make content available online if a student gets sick--this needs to be an option for all students.
2. Attendance cannot be required for physical or online class--students should be judged by the quality of their work. This will also take the pressure off instructors to track both online and physical attendance, which is what they are currently being told to do.
3. Instructors must be able to choose whether they will teach in person or remotely, regardless of their "eligibility" based on health. Students who desire the in-person experience can gather in the classroom to engage with their peers during class.
