We are elated to tell you that last week Elmbridge Borough Council showed that they listen to what their constituents and the wider community really want and at the planning committee meeting, REFUSED Royal Mail's planning application on the grounds that
"The proposed change of use is considered to be detrimental to the character of the locality as (Langley Records) provides a unique retail use that adds value to the community of the area and borough as a whole. Its loss would not take account of its standing as a cultural asset valued within and outside of the Elmbridge Borough and the demand for the existing use and its wider benefit to the community is considered to outweigh the local need for the proposed use. As such, the development is considered to be contrary to policies CS1, CS7 and CS18 of the Elmbridge Core Strategy 2011".
This positive outcome simply would not have happened without the voice of every single one of YOU who stood up and signed and shared in support of Langley Records and commented with such passion and strong belief, whether as a local resident who buys records at Langley's or cares about their community and high street, or as a global supporter of music and/or small independent businesses and communities. A hugely sincere THANK YOU on behalf of Mr Geoff Langley! We expect Royal Mail to appeal, of course (more news as it comes) but Mr Langley will not give up fighting to keep his shop and has been very much encouraged by the knowledge that so many of you care and are willing to stand up for what you feel is right. This is a great victory for people power. If you don't fight, you don't win! Thank you!
