Recently, 45 long-standing members of the Norfolk County Music Service have been informed that this summer they will have to re-apply for 16 positions for no other reason than to cut costs. These teachers do and always have fulfilled their job description and gone above and beyond to provide children of Norfolk with a respite from the monotonous academic systems. Should they be successful in reapplication of their jobs, they will face a 21% pay cut, despite fulfilling the same job role. The council is also planning to raise the charge to schools for these instrumental teachers, an increase that the schools have already stated that they cannot finance. These are not effective ways to lower costs, these are calculated cuts to dismantle a long standing service that has provided children with a safe place and community, sending many into successful musical careers.
