"Elizabeth J. Brown Way" Honorary Street Sign

The Issue

My mother, Elizabeth J. Brown, used to visit the post office almost every day – sometimes twice a day. Taking the same path each time, she followed the red brick road to send out her cards, letters and packages for celebration, sympathy, love, or encouragement. She felt that it was her calling to support others, and she took her work seriously. All those who had the pleasure of knowing her were made better by the love she so freely gave.

Will you help us honor her life? Join our campaign to have an honorary street sign placed near the Post Office in Rock Island, IL.

The reason to use this Change.org platform is to honor someone who lived the motto “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” If hate is political, then so too can be love. The politics of love can invoke change in the lives of others. Elizabeth lived to let God's love shine through her with everyone she met. She was intentional about it.

Elizabeth was born May 19, 1947 in Kewanee, IL, a daughter of Bernard C., Sr. and Flora Mae (McIntyre) Smith. She married Donald J. Brown on June 10, 1967 in Kewanee, IL. He survives. Liz was a loving homemaker for her husband and 3 children. She had many spiritual children, who she mothered and loved with her whole heart. Her door was always open, and her heart was always welcoming. She loved to give hugs, and always had a kind word, a prayer, and a meal to offer anyone who came her way.

She loved spending time with her family and writing cards and letters to friends and loved ones. She was a prolific writer, and she used her gift greatly throughout the years to encourage others, following in the footsteps of her late grandmother whom she loved dearly. Liz’s life was an open book for all to read, and her message was love.

Elizabeth J. Brown was the epitome of love. She was beautiful, both inside and out. She touched hearts and inspired many. She may be gone in the physical, but her spirit is very much alive. The seeds she planted and the love she gave live on. Please help our family honor the legacy of the love she gave by signing this petition.
