Eliminating and replacing plastic packaging in Quebec grocery stores
Eliminating and replacing plastic packaging in Quebec grocery stores
The Issue
Petition to François Legault: Premier of Quebec, and Benoit
Charette: Quebec Minister of the Environment
Dear Mr. Legault and Mr. Charette,
Over the past couple of decades, climate change has become one of the most prominent issues in today’s age. One of the major contributors to the problem is the use of plastic packaging in the food industry. Most food packing is made from raw and non recycled plastics which “generates air emissions including greenhouse gases, heavy metals and particulates, as well as wastewater and sludge containing toxic contaminants.” (Foodprint, 2024).
We are aware that Quebec is trying to lessen the amount of single-use plastic items in the food packaging industry:“Québec: Aims to reduce single-use plastic packaging, containers, and bags by 50% by 2030.” (Solpak, 2025). However your approach is not effective enough considering the urgency of the situation. Therefore we, the undersigned residents of Quebec, call upon you to ban all unnecessary plastic packaging in grocery stores by the end of 2030, we can then replace these with biodegradable packaging options such as Solpak as we have slowly been doing. Yes, it will be very hard to do, but undoing the damage we have already caused will inevitably be a tough task. We urge you Mr. Legault & Mr. Charrette, to think of the future of the Quebec youth, we are confident you will consider our request and make the right decision.
Thank you,
Branden Martin, Sol Avayou
