The Issue
Plastic pollution is a pressing environmental issue, and it's one that affects us all. It is particularly distressing to see single-use plastics, such as utensils, end up in our precious oceans, contributing to the massive islands of garbage floating in these waters. This reality hits close to home for me because I believe it's our responsibility to ensure that we do not contribute to this global crisis.
At Cal Poly, we pride ourselves on being an innovator in sustainability, yet our dining services still provide single-use plastic utensils that often end up not being recycled. Given how located we are in California, recognized for its beautiful coastlines, the irony cannot be overstated. We can and should do better.
The solution is clear and feasible: Cal Poly Dining should transition from single-use plastic utensils to sustainable options such as reusable or biodegradable utensils. Many universities across the country have already made this shift, demonstrating not only its feasibility but also multiple benefits; from reduced waste production to an enhanced campus reputation as a sustainable and forward-thinking place.
According to the Earth Day Organization, approximately 8 million metric tons of plastic enter the ocean each year. This plastic harms marine life and disrupts ecosystems, but change is possible and necessary. Implementing reusable or compostable utensils can significantly reduce our plastic footprint, setting an example for other institutions to follow.
By taking action and signing this petition, you are voicing your support for a greener, more sustainable future at Cal Poly. Let's urge Cal Poly Dining to lead by example and make this vital change for our planet and future generations. Please sign this petition and help us eliminate the use of single-use utensils at Cal Poly Dining.
