Eliminate the Term "Widow" from Official Paperwork

The Issue

I am starting this petition following a deeply personal loss. Last year, very unexpectedly, I became what society routinely labels a 'widow'. My incredibly remarkable husband, who was full of laughter, love, and an amazing sense of humor, passed away at the age of 55. His absence has left an indelible void in my life. However, in my heart, I remain his wife and wear that title with utmost pride.

Despite my personal sentiment, I am increasingly confronted by companies, particularly within the insurance sector, insisting that I must label myself as a 'widow'. This not only feels alienating, but also delegitimizes my status as a married woman in the face of a tragic loss. It is currently the standard practice that not complying with this alien term can lead to accusations of dishonesty.

Let's be clear about this - it's time to change the terminology we use. It's estimated that around 800,000 people in the U.K are widowed each year. So, there are countless individuals just like me, who experience both the pain of losing a spouse, and the entailed social pressure to reclassify their marital status. This is not just about paperwork - it's about recognising, respecting and legitimising the feelings of those left behind.

Let’s unite to redefine how society and institutions label us after such personal losses. Let's work towards removing the term 'widow' from official paperwork. We deserve the right to hold onto our marital status if we choose to. Help me bring about this change. Sign this petition.
