It breaks my heart to see people in my own community, here in Stroud and across Gloucestershire, gather the courage to ask for help only to find themselves abandoned by a system that stops caring once they turn 25. Adults over 25 are languishing on NHS waiting lists that can stretch from several months to over a year, with their mental health deteriorating as a result. These waiting lists are not just a delay—they are a death sentence for some.

National statistics paint a grim picture: 80% of individuals see their conditions worsen while waiting for care, and nearly one in three attempt suicide out of hopelessness. In Gloucestershire alone, 171 people have tragically lost their lives to suicide across a recent three-year period.

An adult's life does not become less valuable upon reaching a certain age, nor does their need for care lessen. The so-called "age 25 cliff edge" in adult mental health services is a failure of our healthcare system that we cannot ignore. Stroud—and every corner of Gloucestershire—deserves better.

We, as a community, need to demand change for our adult mental health services. We need a system that supports all adults, regardless of age, with services that are prompt, accessible, and truly supportive of mental health recovery.

I propose that Gloucestershire NHS create a seamless continuation of care for individuals transitioning from youth to adult services, ensuring no interruption once they hit 25. Experts should be consulted to develop a framework that eliminates prolonged waiting times and provides immediate attention to those in crisis.
