The Issue

Every month, my mother's fixed income is stretched thinner and thinner. After paying for essential medications, utility bills, and other everyday necessities, there isn't much left over. Yet, she—and many of our seniors here in Berkeley County, West Virginia—are burdened with an additional tax: school bond taxes. It’s unfair and unsustainable, creating significant hardships for seniors like her who already contribute through state and federal taxes.

Our seniors have spent their lives contributing to the community and helping to build a vibrant and well-educated society. However, now it's time for us to give back. School bond taxes may be a crucial tool for the development and maintenance of educational facilities, but it’s important to acknowledge that overly burdening our seniors is not the solution. Many are living on fixed incomes, which does not adjust proportionally with rising costs. Per the National Council on Aging, approximately 25 million Americans aged 60+ are living at or below 250% of the federal poverty level. It's crucial that we address these financial strains by looking at how such taxes impact our elderly.

We can approach this issue pragmatically by creating a policy that entirely exempts seniors over the age of 65 from paying these school bond taxes. Alternatively, implementing a tax credit for seniors could alleviate some of these financial hardships, ensuring they continue to have access to what they need without feeling financially stifled. Since similar policies have been implemented in various other counties and states with considerable success, it signals that such initiatives can work if tailored carefully to meet the unique needs of our seniors and community.

Furthermore, it's essential to open a dialogue with local government officials, including the Berkeley County Council and our state representatives, about prioritizing alternative funding measures. Acquiring funds through grants or reallocating local budgetary expenses could potentially offset any deficits that an exclusion of seniors from school bond taxes might incur.

It is time Berkeley County leads by example in compassion and intelligence by reevaluating these tax burdens. Our seniors deserve to feel secure in their financial futures. Please join me in advocating for a fairer system that recognizes the invaluable contributions of our elders by signing this petition. Together, we can urge our policymakers to craft policies that protect our seniors and ensure fiscal responsibilities are more evenly distributed.
