Eliminate Polystyrene Use in Houston ISD School Cafeterias

Eliminate Polystyrene Use in Houston ISD School Cafeterias
The Issue
We are 4th grade students at River Oaks Elementary in Houston, Texas where polystyrene use in our cafeteria is causing serious environmental concern. Polystyrene products, like the food trays we use for lunch, do not biodegrade and can take hundreds of years to decompose. They also are known to leach potential toxins into food when heated. These trays contribute significantly to the problem of landfill overcrowding, while creating potential health risks for us, the students (source: Harvard University). It is time for HISD schools to prioritize the health of its students and the environment. We request the cafeteria to transition from polystyrene trays to more sustainable options, like recycled paper or biodegradable alternatives. The change we propose isn’t just about us; its impact will be felt by future generations. Please sign this petition and join us in calling for an end to polystyrene use in HISD school cafeterias.
