Los Angeles shelters are overcrowded, and countless cats and dogs are facing euthanasia simply because they don’t have a home. Pet rent can create a financial barrier for renters who want to adopt, even when they’re choosing to save a life. Rent is expensive enough. Ending pet rent for rescue animals would directly support adoption and reduce shelter overcrowding.

Plus, as a result of pet rent, more people are registering their animals as emotional support animals without otherwise needing to in order to avoid fees, which can negatively impact those who rely on ESAs and service animals.

By removing pet rent for rescue animals, we can support ethical adoption without pushing people to misuse ESA registrations. It protects renters, animals, and the integrity of service and support animals. 

By encouraging policies that make adoption more accessible, the city can foster a culture that benefits both people and animals alike, rewarding those who actively help our community through rescue.
