Eliminate NetRef from North Carolina Schools to Protect Student Privacy

The Issue

As a student in North Carolina, I am deeply concerned about the use of a "security" software called NetRef in our schools. This software, which is essentially spyware, has access to an alarming amount of personal information and capabilities. It can access cameras, microphones, screens, browsing history, dates of birth, screen locations and identifiers. It can even gain access to names and passwords as well as personal devices such as Gmail accounts and home computers. This software lags the devices and is super INTRUSIVE!!

This extension has the power to change sites and block content at will while continuously monitoring users. What's more concerning is that it operates at a government level - an unprecedented level of surveillance for educational institutions.

The use of such invasive technology infringes on the rights to privacy that we all should enjoy as citizens. In fact, according to a study by the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), students are most vulnerable when it comes to data collection practices because they often lack the ability or knowledge needed for effective self-defense against tracking (EFF 2017).

We must take action now before this violation becomes normalized within our education system. We need your support in calling for the removal of NetRef from schools across North Carolina Schools!!

By signing this petition you are standing up for student privacy rights and helping us bring this issue before court where we hope it will be addressed appropriately. Please sign my petition today so together we can protect our right to privacy!
