Eliminate Mandatory French Classes to Shorten School Day in Ontario

The Issue

We are a group of students from Ontario, Canada who feel overwhelmed by the length of our school day due to mandatory French classes. We find these classes unnecessary and tedious, as we believe we will never need to use French in our daily lives. The time spent on these lessons could be better utilized for other activities like socializing with friends, pursuing hobbies or getting enough sleep.

Research shows that Canadian students are among those with the longest school days worldwide (OECD). This extended duration can lead to stress and fatigue, affecting both our mental health and academic performance. Moreover, while bilingualism has its benefits, it should not be enforced at the expense of personal interests or rest.

We propose that French classes become optional rather than compulsory in Ontario schools. This would allow us more control over how we spend our time at school and help us achieve a healthier work-life balance.

We urge the Ministry of Education in Ontario to consider this change for the well-being of its students. Please sign this petition if you support shorter school days without mandatory French classes!
