Kathleen Wynne: Eliminate Human Trafficking in Ontario, Canada

Every day in Ontario, human traffickers lure Canadian girls and women, often over the internet, into sexual exploitation. Traffickers manipulate their victims with ‘gifts’, ‘romance’ and ‘promises of a better life’. Once the girls and women are trapped by this deception, they cannot escape because the traffickers use threats, coercion, debt bondage and force to exploit them for lucrative profits. Although hard to track, detectives and social workers estimate that in Ontario alone, there are thousands of victims of this form of modern day slavery. This is an outrage against the dignity of human persons and it has to stop.
In May, 2015 Ontario MPP Laurie Scott introduced a private member’s motion that passed unanimously, calling on the government to create a task-force to eliminate human trafficking in Ontario. To date, however, no concrete action has been taken to fund the necessary multi-jurisdictional task-force.
We are calling on the government of Ontario to devote the necessary resources for a coordinated task-force of victims’ services, law enforcement agencies, Crown prosecutors, judges and frontline agencies to protect Ontarians from these predators.
The Toronto members of the Catholic Network for Women’s Equality (cnwe.org) have worked to raise awareness about human trafficking for the last decade. We invite you to sign this petition.
