Eliminate Homework in Sachem Schools

The Issue

My daughter Hanah has spent countless hours researching the impact of homework on students. Her findings have been eye-opening and alarming. It turns out that homework is causing more harm than good in most cases. She presented to the Sachem Curriculum Council and they have invited her back next month to continue to conversation. We believe that real change is possible!

Finland, which boasts one of the highest-rated education systems globally, has banned homework altogether. They believe that children learn better when they are not burdened with additional tasks at home (World Economic Forum). This approach allows children to engage in other enriching activities such as sports or arts after school hours.

Moreover, studies have shown that excessive homework can lead to high stress levels and physical health problems among students (American Psychological Association). In fact, there's no substantial evidence proving significant academic benefits from assigning daily homework to elementary school students (Cooper et al., 2006).

In light of these facts and for the well-being of our children in Holbrook schools, we urge our local educational authorities to reconsider their policies on assigning homework. Let's aim for a balanced education system that promotes learning without compromising our children's mental and physical health.
