Eliminate Fines for One Family Holiday During School Year
Eliminate Fines for One Family Holiday During School Year
The Issue
Like many families, we find that the cost of holidays during school breaks is prohibitively expensive. This financial strain prevents us from taking our children on enriching experiences outside of their daily routine. We believe that every child deserves the opportunity to explore new environments and cultures, which can significantly contribute to their personal growth and learning.
However, current legislation imposes fines on parents who take their children out of school for holidays during term time. This policy not only restricts families with lower incomes but also puts unnecessary pressure on parents who simply wish to provide a well-rounded education for their children.
According to a report by The Independent in 2017, more than 150,000 parents were fined an average of £176 each for taking their children out of school without permission in just one academic year. These figures highlight the extent and impact this policy has had on families across the country.
& Now, the government is planning on making it even more difficult with rises in penalties and a text sevice to bring your child to school immediately?
If holiday companies priced the same all year round nobody would be taking their children out of school.. but the parents are punished and have to make a decision whether to take their child out of school and risk a fine or pay double for the same holiday?
Ridiculous.
We are calling upon our local government officials and educational authorities to reconsider this punitive measure. Instead, we propose a more flexible approach that allows each family one permitted holiday per academic year without fear of financial penalty.
Let's make education inclusive and accessible for all by removing these barriers that prevent families from providing enriching experiences for their children outside the classroom setting. Please sign this petition today!
