Eliminate Discrimination Against Felons in Job Applications

Eliminate Discrimination Against Felons in Job Applications
The Issue
My experience as an American citizen has given me insight into an unjust predicament that many face. A past felony conviction often becomes a stumbling block, keeping capable individuals from obtaining gainful employment. Despite one's ability to fulfil job requirements, declaring a felony on an application often results in automatic disqualification.
We live in a nation where even our leaders have blemishes on their records. Our current president was appointed into office with a felony next to his name, suggesting that past mistakes should not determine future opportunities. Yet, society remains cruelly unforgiving to countless capable Americans who made mistakes in their past and are trying to make amends.
This is not merely a personal issue, but a national one which affects millions. According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, as many as one in three Americans have a criminal record, many of whom struggle to find employment because of this mark on their history. It creates a contradiction of a rehabilitation system that punishes those it is supposed to help reintegrate into society.
It is high time we reviewed this outdated practice that negatively impacts a significant portion of our population. We call for the removal of questions related to past felony convictions on all job applications. This action will assist in creating a more equitable society where skill and merit supersede past mistakes.
We urge you, as employers, lawmakers, and citizens, to support this petition and foster a truly inclusive and fair job market where everyone has a chance. Our collective step can help rebuild lives and contribute to a better, stronger future for all Americans. Please sign this petition.
