In recent years, data centers have popped up across the United States, consuming vast amounts of resources that could be better used elsewhere. As a concerned citizen, I've watched in dismay as these facilities continue to proliferate, siphoning off the energy and water – two resources we cannot afford to waste, especially in the midst of climate change and increasing resource scarcity.

Data centers are responsible for approximately 2% of the global greenhouse gas emissions and are ravenously expanding their reach. These centers require enormous amounts of electricity, contributing significantly to our national energy bill, and exacerbating the nation's energy crisis. On top of this, data centers also use around 1.8% of the United States' total electricity and require large quantities of water to keep their systems cool.

Given these facts, it's clear that data centers are becoming unsustainable. Our country needs to prioritize resources that benefit all of its citizens, like renewable energy development and water conservation, rather than pouring them into a technology that contributes to environmental degradation.

We can leverage more sustainable alternatives, such as decentralized data storage solutions and cloud computing efficiency improvements, to reduce our reliance on traditional data centers. By making these shifts, we can free up vital resources for crucial areas such as water preservation and sustainable energy solutions.
