Support El Paso Chief of Police Greg Allen

The Issue

Please support El Paso Chief of Police Greg Allen and the El Paso Police Department.

Chief Allen has given selfless service to the El Paso community for 42-years, 12 of which as the head, or chief, of the police department.  Chief Allen has been a great leader of the police department helping to create and then maintain a positive relationship with the community they serve.  This positive relationship is evident in several ways just a few of which are, low crime rate; residents comfortable with reporting crimes and other problems to the police; several police/community partnerships through community policing initiatives.

However, the most obvious testament of the positive police/community relationship is the recent El Paso participation in national protests in response to the in-custody death of George Floyd.  El Paso has not experienced the violent and destructive reaction to Mr. Floyd’s death seen in other cities across our nation.  This can be attributed to three things. First, the peaceful people of El Paso.  Second, El Pasoans have not been subjected to the type of policing that has created a distrust of police evident in some of the cities experiencing unrest (this is directly attributable to the leadership provided by Chief Allen).  Third, the demographics of the El Paso Police Department truly mirror the demographics of the El Paso community (again attributable to the department’s recruitment efforts under Chief Allen).

There have been relatively very few arrests during the protests in El Paso and only one incident in which officers deployed less lethal force to regain control of an unruly crowd who had embedded themselves in with the peaceful protesters.  This overall measured response to the protests is because of the great leadership Chief Allen has given the El Paso Police Department for his entire career, but especially the last 12 years as Chief of Police.
